Giant's Causeway Ireland |
Giant's CausewayThe Giant's Causeway is located on the northeast coast of Northern Ireland, about two miles north of the town of Bushmills, and lies at the foot of the basalt cliffs along the sea coast on the edge of the Antrim plateau. The causeway is formed from 38,000 interlocking hexagonal shaped basalt columns. Many have dubbed the causeway the 8th wonder of the world, it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986, and a National Nature Reserve in 1987 by the Department of the Enviroment for Northern Ireland. This beautiful breathtaking geological landscape is the most popular tourist attraction in Northern Ireland. According to scientists the causeway was formed by an ancient volcanic eruption, but it has long been shrouded in the myth and legend of the Giant Finn MacCool. |
